DEFINITIVE LASER HAIR REMOVAL

Practical information about laser hair removal:

It provides a means to destroy hair bulbs using photothermolysis, no anaesthetic required.

An average of 5 to 10 sessions at 6-10 week intervals is necessary to achieve a result, depending on the zones treated. The duration of a session can vary depending on the zones treated; a number of areas can be treated during a single session.

An initial interview will be held to explain the procedure, establish a quotation and complete a preliminary test.

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT LASER HAIR REMOVAL

Laser hair removal destroys hair bulbs using photothermolysis, without the need for any anaesthetic.

The laser is attracted by pigment which means that it can be less effective in treating, grey, blond or red hair which contain little pigment, and will have no effect whatsoever on white hair.

For darker skin types (phototypes 5 & 6) the melanin of the skin competes with that of the hair increasing the risk of damaging the skin and therefore this kind of treatment is not recommended.

The Clinique du Lac uses a number of different types of laser. Depending on the patient, certain types of laser are better suited than others, and certain parameters need to be taken into consideration. We propose alexandrite and diode lasers which are more active on paler skin types, as well as Nd-YAG lasers which can be used on pigmented skin.

LASER TREATMENT PRECAUTIONS AND CONTRAINDICATIONS

Important: An initial interview will be held during which the procedure will be explained in full, a quotation will be established and a test will be completed at least 48 hours before any treatment session.

Depending on the skin phototype, a specific period of time should be respected between the last exposure to the sun or artificial sun-tanning session and the start of the treatment; the skin will need to be as pale as possible since the laser cannot distinguish between the melanin of tanned skin and that of the hair. Tanning creams must be avoided.

Certain medications (anti-epileptics, antibiotics, etc.) can increase the skin’s sensitivity to the laser and result in burns at doses which would otherwise be risk-free. All medication should be signalled. Photosensitive medication treatments for acne such as Roaccutane ® can react to laser treatment. Such medication should be stopped for 1 to 2 years (depending on the planned treatment duration) before starting treatment.

Herpes simplex is stimulated by heat.

Generally speaking hair removal treatment is not suitable for pregnant or breast-feeding women.

Laser hair removal is not generally recommended for young men or on areas of the body where hair-growth has not finished developing.

LASER TREATMENT AND RESULTS

6 to 8 sessions are necessary except in certain specific cases. The quantity of melanin in hair is at its highest during growth, therefore this is when removal is most effective. Since not all hair will be in this phase at the same time a number of sessions will be necessary.

Certain areas, such as the chin, may require annual maintenance treatment.

Patient satisfaction for this type of treatment is generally excellent. After a number of sessions, this method can achieve genuinely lasting or even permanent results. Some exceptions exist however and, unfortunately, these are unpredictable and difficult to quantify or anticipate.

POST-LASER HAIR REMOVAL TREATMENT CARE

The treatment is generally well-supported. There are hardly any side-effects, any that may occur are generally of little consequence. After the session, the appearance of the treated areas can vary from one patient to another, depending on the extent of the procedure and skin type.

Reddening and a slight oedema around each hair follicle are generally considered as a positive result since they imply that the follicle has reacted to the treatment. There can also be a sensation of heat similar to “sunburn”. This will last for no more than a few minutes, or hours at the worst. A soothing cream can be applied at the end of the session.
