What causes puffiness and dark circles under the eyes?

Lack of sleep, smoking, unbalanced diet or poor circulation - there are many factors that contribute to dark circles and puffiness under the eyes. As we age, facial skin becomes less elastic, eyelids droop and eyes look sadder, duller and more tired.

There are two types of dark circles:

  • Vascular dark circles are bluish in color and appear when blood circulation is impaired.
  • Pigmented dark circles are brown in color and are linked to an overproduction or maldistribution of melanin.

Bags under the eyes, on the other hand, set in over time, and are linked to poor lymphatic circulation and fat deposits under the lower eyelid, combined with sagging skin.

How can you slow the appearance of dark circles and/or reduce their appearance?

To combat puffiness and dark circles, you first need to adopt a healthy lifestyle: get enough sleep, avoid excessive alcohol and tobacco consumption, and limit exposure to UV rays.

You can also massage the eye contour area, morning and night, to stimulate blood circulation. Use the pad of your index finger to make small circular movements from the outer corner to the inner corner of the eye.

As cold is an excellent remedy for activating blood circulation, you can place cucumber slices or teaspoons in the refrigerator over your eyes.

Finally, you can use an anti-dark circle make-up product, half a tone lighter than your skin tone, and dab it onto dark areas.

How do you make dark circles and bags under the eyes disappear for good?

Aesthetic medicine and surgery can help you regain a fresher, younger look. Depending on your case and the presence of wrinkles, several techniques can be combined to achieve optimal results. Your Clinique du Lac surgeon can offer you blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) combined with a facelift, PRP injections or liposculpture...

What is blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is a minimally invasive eyelid surgery with excellent results. It provides lasting correction of drooping upper eyelids, sagging and wilted lower eyelids or bags under the eyes.

Before the operation, the surgeon performs an examination of the eyes and eyelids, as well as a pre-operative check-up and a consultation with the anesthetist. The operation can be performed on an outpatient basis or with a short hospital stay. During the operation, the surgeon makes skin incisions on the eyelids, removes excess skin or fat, and sutures with very fine threads to create discreet scars. The main post-operative effects are swelling and bruising, and a return to normal life can be expected within a week.

The result is quickly visible, and the eyes appear more rested. The final result can be appreciated after 3 to 6 months, while the tissues regain their suppleness.

PRP injections to reduce dark circles

PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, is a natural treatment derived from the patient's own blood to revitalize tissues. After a blood test and simple centrifugation, platelet-rich plasma is injected into the delicate area around the eye. The growth factors contained in the platelets stimulate the multiplication of fibroblasts and the production of collagen. PRP helps to tighten the eyelid, smooth fine lines and reduce pigmentation.

In the case of deep, sunken dark circles, it may be advisable to combine PRP with hyaluronic acid injections or liposculpture (reinjection of autologous fat) to restore the necessary volume.
