Wrinkles are natural and appear over time.

They reflect who we are and tell of our emotions, our laughter and sometimes our worries. Many factors come into play, which is why their appearance varies from one person to another.

What are wrinkles? Why do they appear?

A wrinkle is a fold or line that forms on the skin.
Over the years, the skin loses its firmness and elasticity, making these marks more or less visible.

Although everyone goes through this at some point in their lives, certain factors can accelerate and accentuate the process.

Why do I have wrinkles?

  • Natural aging

As we age, our skin produces less collagen and elastin, essential fibers for keeping skin firm and smooth.

  • The sun

Exposure to UV rays damages the skin deep down, accelerating skin aging.

  • Lifestyle habits and lack of hydration

Smoking, drinking too much alcohol and lack of sleep all weaken the skin.

  • Facial expressions

Laughing, frowning or squinting create creases that become permanent wrinkles over time.

Different types of wrinkles

Not all wrinkles are alike. They vary according to their origin and location.

  • Expression lines

They are caused by repeated, long-term movements, such as smiling or frowning. The areas concerned are the forehead (horizontal lines), the glabella (frown lines) and the outer corners of the eyes (crow's feet).

  • Static wrinkles

These wrinkles form as a result of the skin's loss of elasticity. As a result, they are visible even when the face is at rest. The areas concerned are the nasolabial folds (from the wings of the nose to the corners of the mouth) and the bitterness folds (at the corners of the mouth).

  • Superficial and deep wrinkles

Superficial wrinkles are often due to dehydration or thin skin.
Deep wrinkles appear when the structures beneath the skin sag.

Wrinkles aren't limited to the face. The neck, décolleté and even the hands can become marked over time.
